Chinese Grand Prix Event Information

F1 Chinese Grand Prix event normally takes place at Shanghai International Circuit. Hermann Tilke is the designer behind this circuit, which was completed in 2004. The circuit is one of the most expensive F1 racing facilities in the world. It is the second most expensive track after Abu Dhabi Circuit, which was established in the year 2009.

The vision of this event started in the 1990s when the government of China had planned for a Formula One circuit to be built in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province, in the southern parts of the country. Known as Zhuhai International Circuit, the track was built and provisionally added to the F1 World Championship calendar in 1999. However, the track failed to meet some standards put in place by the FIA.

The government of China didn’t give up, and with assistance from the Macau Grand Prix organisers, a brand new track was designed and built, making it possible for the country to host the first Formula One event in 2004.

The first race took place on 26th September in 2004, and Rubens Barrichello, the driver for Ferrari, was the winner. In 2005, China hosted the final round of F1, in which Fernando Alonso was announced the winner. He won the constructor’s title for the Renault team. And in 2006, Michael Schumacher won the race.

Since 2005, the race has been taking place as various drivers and teams winning the titles. It was until 2020 when the event scheduled to take place on 19th April was postponed and finally cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. And the date for the 2022 edition was also postponed because of the pandemic.

Chinese Grand Prix Circuit

Popularly known as Shanghai International Circuit, the Chinese Grand Prix Circuit was built in 2003, where a marshland in Jiading District was earmarked for F1 greatness. 18 months later and approximately £450 million, the Shanghai International Circuit was ready to host the Formula One event. As mentioned earlier, the track held the first F1 event during the 2004 season. In the same year, it held two new motor races, including the Chinese Grand Prix and Bahrain Grand Prix. Schumacher won all of the two races for Ferrari.

Designed to look like the symbol for Shang that means upwards in China, the track is appealing to both drivers and fans who love to watch Chinese Grand Prix live. There is a unique start to the first lap as drivers of the different teams fly into the tightening Turns One and Two before they dart towards the left through Three and Four.

The super-high corners Seven and Eight are loved by both fans and drivers, while the track also has the longest straights on the F1 calendar. The straight part of the track has a 1.2-kilometre stretch that helps separate Turns Thirteen and fourteen.

Fans of the Formula One event love to visit the Chinese Grand Prix Circuit because of the dynamic and lively cities that are near the track. Also, the sprawling district of Pudong is full of amazing restaurants and bars. And when it is time to enjoy the Chinese F1 qualifying or the main race, you can hop on Line 11 of the Shanghai Metro to get off at the famous Shanghai Circuit stop sixty minutes later.
