Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Event Information

F1 first held its event in Abu Dhabi in 2007. The event was just a Formula 1 Festival, which was announced in January 2007 and took place on 3rd February 2007. Being a free event, it attracted the largest gathering of the modern Formula 1 cars and drivers from all parts of the world, including those outside the Grand Prix.

It was at the festival when the authorities announced that the venue had won all the rights to host a Grand Prix event between 2009 and 2016. Later the same year, the popular Etihad Airways Company negotiated a deal for three years for them to be official sponsors of the Grand Prix event.

In 2009, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was included to the schedule of the season. Despite a few changes on the dates and time, the event took place as planned, and Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel won the race. In 2010, the event was also held on the Yas Marina Circuit, and the Drivers’ championship title was decided in the venue.

Sebastian Vettel completed his 2nd consecutive win on the track, with Fernando Alonso, the championship leader, losing out. The race took place in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020, with Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel, Nico Rosberg, and Max Verstappen being among those who won the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Fernando Alonso announced in 2018 that he had retired from the sport, but he will also compete in the 2021 motor race.

Yas Marina Circuit

In 2006, there were plans to create Yas Island on the east of Abu Dhabi, into a brand-new tourist attraction centre. The major part of the plan was to develop a 5.5 km race track. And the diggers started rolling what would become the popular Yas Marina Circuit towards the mid of 2007.

The project was estimated to be complete in October 2009. And in 2009, the track was home to the first F1 event, which was the season finale. During the event, Sebastian Vettel, the driver for the Red Bull’s team, won the race. A year later, Sebastian secured his first Abu Dhabi Grand Prix title. Hermann Tilke was the man behind the design of the track, which is dominated by a 1.2 km straight surface between turns 7 and 8.

These two turns represent the slowest speed corners of the track. Other amazing features of the track include a tricky run through corners 15, 16, and 17. These turns force drivers to brake hard with some bags of lateral load still on their respective cars.

The West Grandstand is one of the greatest places to watch all the overtaking actions into turn 8. Alternatively, you can stick in the Main Grandstand to overlook the start-finish straight as you enjoy the famed pyrotechnics of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Circuit.
